Dear College Advisor,
I’m a Guardian Provider with a major in marketing. I have an internship lined up for this summer. Do you have any tips for making the most of my experience?
Dear Guardian:
Congratulations about your internship. I’m sure you already know the advice about being on time and getting work done when you say you will. Be sure to let your boss know if any work will be delayed. People will expect you to ask for advice when you need it. Learn the names of people as quickly as you can so you can call them by name. Be sure to develop some good contacts that you can still keep in contact when the internship is over. Getting a network of professional contacts is necessary in the field of marketing.
Dear College Advisor,
I thought I’d like to be a nurse, but somehow it is taking more out of me than I’d like. I’m beginning to think I’d like to be a genetic counselor. I do know that I’d have to get a Master’s degree in the field and luckily my college is one of the ones that offer it. Could that type of job fit my personality style?
Dear Idealist,
Your style is definitely a fit in this field. If you haven’t already asked for an appointment with the head of that department, do so. Prepare a set of questions, such as what is special about your program? Where are your graduates employed? See if you can talk with someone working in the field. You need to see if your assumptions about the job fit with the reality. Talk to the contacts about what you like and dislike about nursing so they will be better able to see if genetic counseling will be a good fit for you. The more questions you ask, the better you’ll be able to satisfy yourself about the career fit.
