Q&A with the College Advisor

By CollegeAdvisor on 07-19-2008

Dear College Advisor,
People sometimes treat ranchers as hicks, but this is a tough business and you have to know what you are doing.  I’m really into financial analysis and enterprise management and have talked to my dad about some new ideas.  He knows we have to grow with the times and that’s why he sent me to college, but he tends to hug the old ways.  He’s probably a Guardian Inspector.  He is resisting my ideas so how can I get him to go along?

Dear Artisan:
You probably are pushing the ones that seem the most exciting to you and the riskiest to him.  Guardian Inspectors are best persuaded when they see that someone else is using an idea that works and that it cuts risk and is profitable.  Examine your proposals to see what best fits that formula.  Take him to see an actual working situation.  If you keep following this formula you will be able to inch him along and when he sees success, he’ll be more ready to look at your more exciting ideas.

Dear College Advisor,

I am a Rational Mastermind in bioengineering.  There are many challenges in this field in both medical and environmental applications.  I thought I’d prefer the medical challenges, but find I am being drawn toward the environment issues.  For instance, many third world countries have badly contaminated water which impacts the food chain. I’m more intellectual than physically observant and wonder if I would do as well in the field as I would in a lab.  I’m spending this summer in a lab on a medical project.

Dear Rational,
You’ll need to try both to see which suits you best.  If you don’t graduate next June, see if you can get a field posting next summer.  Different universities specialize in different aspects of bioengineering.  Since you know you’ll need to go to grad school, take time to see which program seems most interesting.  Start corresponding with schools now and getting to know the people in the field.  Join a professional organization as a student.  Apply your researching skills to investigating career possibilities.  The more you know, the better you will be able to choose.
