Temperament and Our Every Day Preferences

And something new coming soon

By KipParent on 05-13-2008

Over the past several years, we have run optional surveys following the Keirsey Temperament Sorter-II.  Usually consisting of 10-12 questions, people who have completed the KTS-II have the option of answering the additional questions, or skipping straight ahead to their Keirsey Temperament report.

Usually the questions we ask have to do with looking at the potential links between our temperament, and everyday preferences - for example: movie ratings, political leanings, holiday gift giving likes and dislikes.

The findings have been quite interesting, some of which I've written about here at PersonalityZone such as how the different types deal with Holiday stress.  Here's some other interesting relationships between temperament and other preferences we've found:

Movies:
Idealists are the most likely, of the 4 temperaments, to go to the theatre to see a movie, while Guardians are the least likely.  However, those Guardians who do go to the cinema are more likely than the other 3 temperaments to go 4 times or more in a month.

When it comes to genres, there appear to significant differences between the 4 temperaments (perhaps this contributes to the difficulties many of us have in agreeing on which film to see with our partner).  Rationals prefer action, horror and other types of films, while disliking comedies, family films and romances.  Artisans prefer comedies and suspense movies while disliking dramas.  Idealists prefer dramas but dislike action movies and horror films.  Guardians like family films and romances but do not care for suspense movies. Some specific examples:  Idealists loved Brokeback Mountain, while Guardians disliked it.  Rationals and Idealists highly enjoyed Goodnight and Good Luck, while Guardians and Artisans did not.  Guardians liked Failure To Launch, but Idealists disliked it, and Rationals hated it.

Politics:
Guardians are the most likely to be a registered member of one of the main political (Democratic and Republican) parties, and are slightly more likely to be Republicans than Democrats.  Rationals are the least likely to be registered in these parties, but if they are, are the most likely to be Democrats.  They are also the most likely to identify themselves as Independent.  The small parties (Green and Liberartian) each appeal to about 7 percent of Artisans, Idealists, and Rationals, but only 3 percent of Guardians.

Artisans are the least likely to plan on voting (they are also the least likely to be registered to vote).  If they do vote, they make up their minds the latest in the election process, which says candidates should spend the bulk of their final day election efforts appealing to Artisan voters.

When it comes to personal feelings about our President, George W. Bush, Guardians are more likely than the other 3 temperaments to agree with the statement "I trust George W. Bush", while Rationals are the most likely to strongly disagree.  Idealists are only slightly less negative than Rationals toward the President, and Artisans are the least likely to have a strong opinion one way or the other.

Coming Soon:
We've run a number of individual movie rating surveys over the past few months and found that the differences between the 4 temperaments in terms of likes and dislikes are pretty constant.  We will be rolling out a new and improved PersonalityZone this summer that will include movie ratings by temperament - we think it will be a better way to find movies you'll like than any other recommendation / rating system currently on the net!

I'd love to participate in some of these surveys. I'm an artisan who likes comedies and family movies, I'm registered to vote, and I trust George W. Bush and would vote for him again if he could run again. =)
