How would you feel if you found out that Hitler or someone of that caliber had the same temperament as you????

I wouldn't take it personally either. Hitler was seriously messed up. Maybe the war messed him up or something. Anybody can get traumatized and seriously messed up. |

Eh...If Hitler was typed as an idealist, it's no big deal. Everyone is unique, even within a particular personality type. |

Bad behavior in personality really only matters in how that bad behavior is manifested. There are other things going on that creates a Hitler: like seeing your mother raped by your father, which happened to Hitler, along with lots of other bad things. |

I had a look at some of the names once, on his son's web page. If I remember correctly, Hitler was listed as an INFP. There is a "dark side" to all of these temperaments obviously. Keirsey has decided to be "politic" about it. You need to read between the lines. He is not going to spell it out. If you read "Please Understand Me," he never overly criticizes any temperament nor points out the obvious "dark side" of say, Artisans, who naturally excel in "tactics." Well, if you read between the lines, the "dark side" of excelling in "tactics" means that Artisans are your usual con men, swindlers in business, and in romance, teases, and sirens non pareil. He also never points out the obvious disadvantages of being one temperament or another in today's society. Yet, if we think for a second, it is probably easier to live as an Artisan or Guardian in today's society than, say, an Idealist. For one thing, the world largely operates on a concrete basis, not the Abstract world that Rationals and Idealists inhabit. Also, dating is a lot easier because the U.S. is something like 80% or higher Artisans and Guardians. It is very difficult for an Abstract temperament to actually find another Abstract in romance. They usually wind up with a Concrete temperament, which does not always lead to happiness in the bedroom or in marriage. ( I write from experience - though not necessarily my own!) Keirsey also stays away from the question as to how much "blame" parents should take for the temperaments of their children. In his book, he claims that science does not know how much of nature or nurture affects temperament. But his own life belies him: Keirsey, a Rational, is the product of two "blazing" Artisan parents. My own opinion is that Abstract children - Rational or Idealist - are raised in an atmosphere of unusual isolation, or emotionally instability, or some combination. Keirsey stays away from all the above issues, because if he starts making judgment calls on people's personalities, this could lead to questions about "eugenics." As a "scientist" this would be the end of his career. My two cents, could be wrong. |

JS, Very interesting theory in regards to Abstract communicators being raised in "unusual isolation, or emotionally instability, or some combination." It is very tough to argue with you about this because I know of so many Abstract individuals who had troubled childhoods... myself included. However, it is also very difficult to quantify how much the childhood problems create abstraction vs. how much they merely illustrate that abstract thinkers have a tough time getting along with concrete communicators and will experience hardships based upon their innate natures clashing with the more prevalent and "acceptable," Concrete world. Still... very thought provoking. |

Yes, there is a large list of questions in this area. For eg. I wonder if and how genetics affects the temperament we are born with but that's a whole other ball game. I would also not be suprised if Hitler was a healer. LOfreakin'L!!!! gotta luv them healers!!!!! |

The "dark side." Like Luke Skywalker. Is Luke Skywalker a healer? Anyway, both my parents are sensors. I'm an intuitive and my parents did not isolate me, nor did they raise me in an emotionally unstable environment. They're the best parents ever. As for the above-mentioned troubled childhood...what defines a troubled childhood? I bet all the children growing up in the (shall I say it?) Holocaust had troubled childhoods, yet not all of them were intuitives. Every temperament does have a dark side. All of the people of different temperaments who followed Hitler didn't have to follow him. As for my parents, they didn't really do anything to shape my temperament when I was a kid. Nope. I was born this way: An INFP healer. I think it might've had something to do with some sort of oxygen deficiency when I was born. Maybe that's how I got ADD, though I didn't find out till 6th grade. (Keirsey mentions ADHD is just a hoax. He's wrong. It's real). And I'm so thankful and lucky to have two loving parents who helped me through my hardest times. |

Eeek! What a horrid concept, abstract or concrete! Heh heh ~ If I were FORCED to choose an Idealist as a Hitler, I'd agree with JS and the INFP possibility. In truth though has anyone considered the "Mastermind" personality type? Help me. I'm too lazy to look up the letters right now, cuz I'm on a roll! Look out! Although, JS, I disagree, as Lesley does, in that while I have no clue as to my parents' types, (Hey! I'm 57!) I too had very encouraging parents. Basically I was left feeling that I was simply delightful in all ways! {Giggle!} My parents are deceased now, but I can't forget an interesting clue to the whole nurture versus nature thing my mom gave me about 15 years ago, and this was prior to my own personality types discovery. I'd been perplexed for a number of years due to an infancy story she told about me merely as an amusement. In a personal quest I was beginning at the time, I asked her to give her gut feeling on why she thought I refused to sleep every night, thinking maybe I had a seriously overlooked physical problem. My mom, being an RN though, had checked all of those possibilities. Then she laughed and said, "Honestly, I realized, especially as you grew, that it was because you absolutely did not want to miss out on ANYTHING!" Isn't that a true ENFP trait? Kiersey suggests that we are born a particular type, & it can be encouraged or discouraged by upbringing. Don't forget though that a "troubled" childhood could in fact greatly encourage a particular Idealist to hold on even stronger to their ideals & break out when they are older. Honestly, though can anyone point to an UNtroubled childhood? To exemplify, I had an older brother who verbally bashed my emotions daily, unbeknownst to my parents. I now realize how it seemed to increase my empathy in certain areas, even though it deeply wounded me. Mostly though can anyone remotely envision ANY Idealist tolerating even one innocent being tortured & murdered? Geeez ~ we'd scream if that happened to a man, woman, child, dog, anteater, or the fly that buzzed around our head! Also, historically Idealists are not politicians. Although "Rabble-rousers" & phenomenal "social movers & shakers" for good over evil ~ INDEED! Hey, AmyLeeandThesea12, great topic to drive us all nutz! To the rest of you guys ~ I thoroughly enjoyed reading your perceptions! Lotsa fun! |

Okay - so just to fill ya'll in...Doctorgiggles99 actuallly started this discussion on the Idealist Love Zone, then when it grew stagnate he wrote his own blog on Hitler...David Keirsey finally gave us his findings the other day in response to his blog. David agrees that Hitler was a healer! To a Champion that doesn't seem possible but once you hang out with a healer for a while you'll realize what their capable of...moodly little buggars they are. Champions fight a cause for the people's sake whilst Healers fight for the purity of the cause itself even if it involves killing in the process. Champions love empowering others and dislike people depending on them, healers on the other hand crave power and influence on a global scale. Mix in a traumatic childhood and some crazy powder and you've got Hitler. |

Have you read Kip Parent's latest blog on Hitler? He has made some interesting points :-) |

P.S. Your dislike(?) for INFPs sounds similar to a certain person's hatred for another group of people during WWII (just kidding ;-) And Dave Keirsey said his father had little use for the introversion/extraversion component. |

I'll be sure to read Kip's comments on Hitler. I doubt that I will change my mind though. I do like healers, in fact out of all the types I am most like them other than the inventor. You sound defensive, does it upset you that Hitler might have been a Healer? |
|
Posted by Lesley on Mar 19, 2008
Maybe it's just your INFP brother-in-law who's a moodly little buggar. |
|
Posted by Malleeman on Mar 20, 2008
No, wasn't upset Hitler could have been a Healer, just take your comments about INFPs as a dislike for them in general. But thanks for clarifying :-) |

You're right, I only personally know a few healers and they grew up in stressful homes. I am wrong in assuming that all are moody little buggars. I have noticed that my bro-inlaw is changing now that he has his own place. What's interesting is where each temperament goes, and what they become in such stressful situations, and in fact that's what I should be focussing on when I discuss people like Hitler, how each temperament deals with stress and if unchecked what they are likely to be. There are some websites about the undeveloped version of all the types and each of their negative tendencies. I guess topics like this hit close to home for me because in my very short life thus far I have seen many pushed to the edge and back, I have seen the devil in their eyes and I have been the victim of their defect. |

I also have met and faced the devil and can usually spot it walking a mile away. (I visualize the family turning uneasily in their sleep while driving past Randall Flagg who is walking on the side of the road ie: King's "The Stand"). I too am very interested in understanding how hurtful or dangerous my own temperament can become if unchecked. This is very important to me to ensure I don't become the devil regardless of what this life puts in my path. |

Strange to read people speculating about Hitler's temperament and Kiersey. i just finished reading "Please Understand Me" (If you haven't, check out your local library, it probably has a copy) and it listed Hitler as being an ENFJ. |

Posted by eilban on Jul 8, 2008
Sorry typo..my last comment should read "Listed Hitler as being an EFTJ" |
|

LOL . Make that "ENTJ". I need to start proofreading before I post |
